'Game of Thrones' scriptwriters sign $200M contract with Netflix
According to Hollywood Reporter, a $ 200 million contract that has just been signed between David Benioff, DB Weiss and Netlfix includes production and scripting for many future movies and episodes. This means the pair of scriptwriters of the "Game of Thrones" series will leave HBO and switch to working on the largest online channel today.
Ted Sarandos - Netflix's content manager wrote in a statement sent to the press on Wednesday that they were delighted to welcome David Benioff and Dan Weiss - master storytellers to Netflix because both of them have made audiences around the world excited about their great storytelling. Also, they couldn’t wait long to know what the two would bring to Netflix members.
"We have had a great adventure with HBO for over a decade and are grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home. For the past few months, we have spent hours Talk to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber, we have a lot in common,” shared David Benioff and DB Weiss. “Netflix has built an amazing and unprecedented achievement. We are honored to be able to join them.”
Thanks to the huge success of "Game of Thrones" so soon after the series ends, David Benioff and Dan Weiss have a new job to write the script for Disney's upcoming “Star Wars” series (in turn screened in 2022, 2024 and 2026). However, their ambition is to be able to build their own company. Therefore, signing long-term contracts at this time means they must receive a large amount of money for the establishment of a studio, which only large units like Amazon, Disney and Netflix can provide.
According to many sources, Amazon initially dominated until July when Netflix offered a more competitive offer. The $ 200 million figure that David Benioff and Dan Weiss received earlier broke the $ 150 million record of Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan - the creators of the Westworld series (HBO) signed with Amazon in April. Even so, plus three upcoming programs with Warner Bros. TV, the total value of contracts this year of Lisa Joy and Jonah Nolan has reached $ 200 million.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO did not have the financial resources, so it did not try to hold back David Benioff and Dan Weiss. However, both are still recognized as producers for the “Game of Thrones” series.
