Do functional foods really improve your skin?

Functional foods containing collagen and hyaluronic acid are very popular in the beauty market today. But do they truly work?

According to Cynthia Sass, an editor of Health Magazine, perhaps the most effective functional food is making your skin healthier. What your body tolerates will be visible through your appearance.

According to Debra Jaliman, a dermatologist from New York, functional foods that contain ingredients such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and biotin can be beneficial. When we get older, we lose both collagen and hyaluronic acid, causing wrinkles and loss of firmness on the skin. These supplements contain small collagen molecules that can be easily absorbed, especially when they are dissolved in liquid, providing collagen to the skin. Besides, hyaluronic acid can help keep the skin looking full and firm.

However, there are many things to consider before using functional foods. Even the most basic types like fish oil and calcium can also interact with other vitamins or drugs. Also, since supplements are not prescribed like medications, some may contain ingredients that may cause worrisome side effects, from nausea to liver damage and cancer.

What functional foods are worth investing in?

If you are going to buy only one type of functional food, you should choose collagen. There have been many studies showing that collagen is beneficial to the skin, according to Sass. New York City Dermatologist Whitney Bowe recommends products derived from skin, bones, fins or scales of fresh or marine fish, as these molecules are smaller and more likely to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

When used continuously, many people find out that functional foods provide good water to the skin and improve wrinkles. Especially with biotin, you may notice stronger nails and hair. Sass also points out that ginseng supplements are good for people with skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema.

How to use functional foods safely

These experts also stress the importance of checking ingredients and dosage. You should consult a doctor or dietitian before taking a new one.

For example, taking too much vitamin C can cause unpleasant side effects like diarrhea or kidney stones. Sass does not recommend taking any antioxidants in the form of supplements, as they can grow to excessively high levels that cross the safe limit.

Functional foods are not a perfect beauty solution

Sadly, no functional foods are capable of giving you youthful or flawless skin. Dr. Jaliman warns that supplementary foods would not have much impact on deep wrinkles. With visible wrinkles, only botox or filler is effective.

Even though functional foods actually have some benefits, a healthy diet is more effective in the long run. In addition, you need to pay attention to the level of stress in your mind, hours of sleep, the amount of water you drink during the day and exercise. If you do not eat enough and only take supplements, you probably will not see the results you want. Combining both sources of nutrients, you will be fine from the inside out.
